Gender Equity Sessions 2019

31/10/2019

Deep Space is very excited to invite all Ultimate players to our Gender Equity in Mixed Ultimate Sessions this winter! Based on the feedback from our sessions last year, we will be running two sessions focused on specific skills and game situations. The sessions will involve skills coaching, focused drills, and games, with a focus on how we can practice gender equitable play in Mixed.

We have developed these sessions within our club as a way of exploring areas we’d like to focus on, but we know we aren’t experts - we hope the sessions will be opportunities for us to learn together. We’ll be asking for your feedback, and we’ve booked a pub nearby after the sessions to continue the discussion for those who can stay.

The sessions are designed for people who have played Ultimate before (you don’t need to have played at a club level, but experience playing in a game will be helpful) and are open to all genders. If you have any questions about the sessions, you can reach us at [email protected]

Sign up link here: https://forms.gle/R4wqbyaah7xWj7RRA.

Recap: Deep Space Gender Equity Sessions 2018

28/10/2019

Inspired by the conversations about gender equity in the London and UK Ultimate community, Deep Space ran two gender-equity focused Mixed skills sessions in December 2018 and January 2019. We wanted to bring some of the ideas and discussions from the classroom to the pitch, and actively test out what it might look like to train Mixed in a gender equitable way.

We’re sharing what we did and what we learned - we’d love for you to give us your feedback or thoughts, use any of this with your own teams or communities, or build on this for your own work.

In this session we focused on issues that affect women in Mixed Ultimate. When we say ‘women’, we mean anyone who identifies as a woman, including trans women, and when we say ‘man’, we mean anyone who identifies as a man, including trans men. We want to acknowledge that we don't think we made enough space for non-binary and gender-non-confirming athletes in this session, and are working on educating ourselves and designing better next year.

We welcome feedback and comments on our language, plans and choices.
You can get in touch with the Deep Space committee at [email protected].

What we aimed to do:

We agreed on which issues we’d like to work on, taking inspiration from our experiences and conversations, Laura Manescu’s articles on Inside Out Ultimate, and Kathy Franz’s statistics published in Ultiworld. We knew we couldn’t work on all of these in a two-hour session, so we chose a few points to start.

We decided to look at:
  • Underrepresentation of women in touches on the disc (as tracked through available statistics)
  • Women feeling looked off, not trusted or not played to their strengths (as represented by our conversations with athletes and articles online)

What we did:

  • All instructions and explanations were given, whenever possible, by women
  • We avoided gendered language whenever possible (using people, athletes, or players rather than ‘guys’)
  • We followed Vancouver Ultimate League’s transgender inclusion policy for gender-matching, which allows players to designate which gender they would like to match up against at the start of a session, so we could split people by their gender match rather than gender: https://www.vul.ca/content/transgender-inclusivity

Deep Space was founded in 2017 with the aim of establishing itself as a sustainable London club focused on high quality and spirited mixed ultimate, and to contend at national and international championships for years to come.

As a club, we learned a lot during our first two seasons. This past season, we won our first tournament (Sudsee, Germany), took the Southern Mixed UKU Regionals Title, and made it to the 3rd place match at Nationals. We are now looking for players of all genders who are spirited, competitive, and eager to learn and develop their game to join our 2019 squad to keep on learning together.

Going into our third season, we have outlined the club’s aims and ethos for the next stage of development:

CLUB AIMS

  • To compete at the highest level nationally and internationally
  • To commit to the Mixed Division of the sport
  • To develop club members towards international competition calibre
  • To uphold and respect the Spirit of the Game
  • To focus on equity and accessibility in our club and beyond

CLUB FOCUSES

Competition: Through player development, high level coaching and captaincy, and regular club trainings, Deep Space is committed to a professional approach to elite play. We want to balance this commitment with a friendly club atmosphere, making sure we enjoy playing together.

Mixed Ultimate:
Deep Space is committed to playing Mixed for the full season, and players will be expected to attend trainings and tournaments during the Open and Women’s season.

Player development:
We commit to development of all players in the club, and will have a core of high level captains and coaches who will be putting their efforts into the individual development of every player in the club. Opportunities to influence decision-making processes and shadow leadership positions are available to all club members.

Spirit:
Respect for other club members, our opponents, and the rules of the game is at the centre of Deep Space’s approach to training and tournaments. The club sets high expectations of its players when it comes to spirit, and will provide opportunities and support for reflecting on and improving individual and collective spirit.

Equity: Deep Space emphasises equitable access, leadership, coaching, strategy, and play. The club aims to ensure all members are valued and can contribute to their best abilities, regardless of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, or socio-economic status. The club will aim to select even numbers of male-identifying and female-identifying athletes in 2019, and continue to emphasise the development and representation of women, trans and non-binary athletes in leadership and play.

Accessibility: We know that Ultimate can be an expensive sport, so we aim to be as financially transparent as possible, and to reduce economic barriers to play. Trials fees will be £10 for one trial, £15 for two, and we estimate that subs this season will be around £300, including tournament entry, training costs and kit, but not including travel and accommodation at tournaments. The club will endeavour to keep all tournament travel and accommodation costs low, and can offer bursaries or waive fees for those for whom financial cost is a barrier on an individual basis.

We hope to see you at trials, and into the season!

GENDER EQUITABLE WINTER SESSIONS: SKILLS, DRILLS, AND GAMES

31/10/2018

Here at Deep Space, we put a lot of thought and energy into developing training sessions, leadership opportunities, on-pitch strategies, and tournament approaches that are gender equitable, prioritise skills and strengths, and emphasise the development of women-in-mixed on field and off.

This winter, we would love to invite all ultimate players to two sessions of equity-focused mixed coaching and games. These sessions will involve skills coaching, focused drills, and game play, with a specific focus on how we can play gender equitable mixed ultimate.

The sessions will be led by Deep Space club members who have played and coached at the highest levels nationally and internationally. If you have some previous ultimate experience, and are keen to play intense and inclusive mixed over the winter months, we hope you will join us on:

Sunday 2nd December, 3:00-5:00pm at Aspire Southfields, SW18 4SS
Sunday 13th January, 4:30-6:30pm at Bacon’s College, SE16 6AT

Sign up here: https://goo.gl/forms/0O0BARub9DS2ysYr2

Each session is £5 in advance, or £6 on arrival, to cover pitch hire. Deep Space is committed to making Ultimate financially accessible, so if cost is a barrier for you please let us know by emailing us at [email protected].

FAQ:

What even is gender equity focused mixed ultimate?

Our G.E. focused sessions will include skills, drills, and games with specific focuses and rules intended to test ways to make more space for female and non-binary athletes on pitch.

They will address practices (such as cutting into space that another player is already cutting for, not keeping defenders occupied, and not using all players' skill-sets and roles) that negatively affect people of all genders, and occur in the women's and open divisions, but that disproportionately affect women and non-binary players in mixed ultimate.

The sessions will further feature women's voices in leadership, a focus on how we use gendered language, and a trans and non-binary athlete inclusive approach to gender line calling.

We don't necessarily have all the answers, but want to test out gender equity theories in practice. We hope that people will bring intensity, curiosity, and spirit. These sessions should be an opportunity to learn and grow for everyone.
