Here at Deep Space, we put a lot of thought and energy into developing training sessions, leadership opportunities, on-pitch strategies, and tournament approaches that are gender equitable, prioritise skills and strengths, and emphasise the development of women-in-mixed on field and off.
This winter, we would love to invite all ultimate players to two sessions of equity-focused mixed coaching and games. These sessions will involve skills coaching, focused drills, and game play, with a specific focus on how we can play gender equitable mixed ultimate. The sessions will be led by Deep Space club members who have played and coached at the highest levels nationally and internationally. If you have some previous ultimate experience, and are keen to play intense and inclusive mixed over the winter months, we hope you will join us on: Sunday 2nd December, 3:00-5:00pm at Aspire Southfields, SW18 4SS Sunday 13th January, 4:30-6:30pm at Bacon’s College, SE16 6AT Sign up here: https://goo.gl/forms/0O0BARub9DS2ysYr2 Each session is £5 in advance, or £6 on arrival, to cover pitch hire. Our G.E. focused sessions will include skills, drills, and games with specific focuses and rules intended to test ways to make more space for female and non-binary athletes on pitch. They will address practices (such as cutting into space that another player is already cutting for, not keeping defenders occupied, and not using all players' skill-sets and roles) that negatively affect people of all genders, and occur in the women's and open divisions, but that disproportionately affect women and non-binary players in mixed ultimate. The sessions will further feature women's voices in leadership, a focus on how we use gendered language, and a trans and non-binary athlete inclusive approach to gender line calling. We don't necessarily have all the answers, but want to test out gender equity theories in practice. We hope that people will bring intensity, curiosity, and spirit. These sessions should be an opportunity to learn and grow for everyone.
